The issue is this: The degeneration goes in tiny steps in which everybody could say it's of too little importance to care about. Every time you back down a step and concede ground. Then at some point, after many years, you look back and recognize the amount of ground lost - it's a gaping cliff filled with shit. Now we stand here, add a century of the same process with some back and forth - and recognize that all the ground that is left now is only an isle amidst of an ocean of shit. Some see it as a clown world - a world of nihilism constituted by the sheer amount of cognitive dissonance ruling the public mindset. The futility of reason and common sense. That's where every single "irrelevant tiny issue" has lead us to.
